A coalition of local, state, and federal governments, along with CenterPoint Properties, collaborate on master planning, and conduct a regional analysis to better understand transportation needs and the infrastructure vision of Will County. 1999
The BNSF Logistics Park Chicago intermodal facility opens.2002
The economic development at CIC-Joliet/Elwood spurs the extension of transit service from PACE, the Chicago area’s suburban transit provider. PACE begins operating two round trips daily in sync with shift schedules at the facility. 2004
I-355 (Veterans Memorial Highway) opens, connecting Interstate Highways 55 and 80, spurring business development and further job growth in Will County. 2007
The Union Pacific’s Global IV intermodal facility opens in CIC– Joliet, and Will County becomes home to the largest inland container port in North America. 2010
  • Illinois Department of Transportation, Will County, and the City of Joliet engage in a joint agreement with CenterPoint Properties to develop a solution to facilitate improvements to Houbolt Road from, and including, the I-80 Interchange and the US-6/Houbolt Road Intersection.
  • The State of Illinois and Will County approve funds and begin to plan for the Houbolt Road Extension.
  • CenterPoint engages a specialty environmental consulting firm to assist with environmental regulatory permitting of the Houbolt Road Extension.
2016
  • C&M Associates, Inc. completes a preliminary study to evaluate the financial feasibility of constructing a tolled bridge to directly access CIC-Joliet/Elwood from I-80.
  • The Houbolt Road Extension project is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • 1 million-square foot expansion groundbreaking ceremony at CIC-Joliet/Elwood.
2017
Houbolt Road Extension JV, LLC and City of Joliet host a joint open house to inform the public of the Houbolt/Hollywood Road reconstruction and extension projects in Joliet, IL. 2018
The Joliet City Council approves 99-year lease agreement for a privately built project. 2020
  • The Houbolt Road Extension project is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Officials from the City of Joliet, Will County, the Illinois Department of Transportation, United Bridge Partners, and CenterPoint Properties gather at the bridge site for a groundbreaking ceremony.
  • Construction of the Houbolt Road Extension begins.
2021
The Houbolt Road Extension opens to traffic April 27. 2023
